01 — What is the OET, and who is it for?
OET (Occupational English Test) is an English-language proficiency test designed specifically for healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors, dentists, and pharmacists. It assesses Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking through realistic healthcare situations, with profession-specific role plays and case notes.
02 — How is the OET scored, and what score do I need to pass?
Each OET sub-test is scored on a 0–500 scale in 10-point increments, which is also mapped to a letter grade from A (highest) to E (lowest). Most regulatory bodies set Grade B, a scale score of 350, as the minimum required in each sub-test. For example, in Listening the 42 questions are marked and converted to the 500-point scale, with a Grade B typically requiring at least 30 correct answers. OET is recognised by more than 550 organisations across over 20 countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as healthcare regulators and institutions in other countries worldwide. 04 — What does the Score Guides Academy OET program cover?
Our program is a fully written, 10-week curriculum covering all four OET skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Every week has a complete lesson plan with Moodle content, live class sessions, and clear learning outcomes. The course is explicitly mapped to OET’s official 20 sub-skills across the four subtests. It takes students from first exposure to exam-ready independence.
05 — How is the course structured?
The course runs for 10 weeks and is divided into four phases: Foundation (Week 1), Part A (Weeks 2–3), Part B (Weeks 4–5), Part C and Standard-Style Practice (Weeks 6–8), and Assessment & Final Mock (Weeks 9–10). Each phase increases in complexity, moving students from single sentences and short answers to full letters and full role plays. This mirrors how OET itself increases task difficulty. Every week builds directly on the skills taught the week before.
06 — What is the blended learning model?
Our program uses a proven 60/40 blended delivery model. Sixty percent of learning happens asynchronously on Moodle, covering lessons, resources, multimedia files, and independent practice tasks. Forty percent is delivered through TWO live classes per week, focused on clarification, feedback, guided practice, and role-play rehearsal. This rhythm repeats consistently from Week 1 through Week 10.
07 — Will I have access to live teachers, or is this self-study?
This is not a self-paced, login-only course. A dedicated team, including Moodle administrators, live-class instructors, and assessment reviewers, supports students throughout the program. Students attend two live, teacher-led classes every week covering all four skills. Every week ends with a clear checkpoint against learning outcomes, so no student’s progress goes unnoticed.
08 — How can I register, and will I study in a large class?
You can register individually or together with your own group, and our classes are normally offered in small cohorts of 4–6 students. Colleagues or groups of healthcare professionals may also create their own cohort, allowing for more interaction, practice, and personalised instructor support.
09 — How are live class times arranged for students in different time zones?
Many of our instructors are based in Vancouver, Canada, with additional instructors in Eastern Canada and the United States. For students in Europe, the Middle East, and other regions, live-class schedules are discussed with each cohort to find times that work well for the students and instructors.
10 — What if my English is not ready for the OET program yet?
We offer two four-week preparatory courses before the OET program: Foundation for learners at an intermediate level and Booster for upper-intermediate learners preparing to enter OET. These courses strengthen the language skills students need before beginning formal OET preparation.
11 — Does the course help with medical vocabulary and grammar, not just exam technique?
Yes. Every week includes purpose-built grammar pamphlets targeting the language demands of that week’s writing and speaking tasks, such as verb tenses, formal register, and conditionals. Students also receive subtest-specific healthcare vocabulary glossaries reinforced through weekly Moodle tasks. This self-paced reinforcement means students arrive at live classes already prepared rather than starting from zero.
12 — How is this course different from other OET exam-prep courses?
Most exam-prep courses repeat the same practice tasks in a loop. Our curriculum is a genuine 10-week progression: students move from single sentences to full letters, and from single questions to full role plays, matching how OET itself increases complexity. It teaches the underlying competencies OET identifies as essential, such as identifying purpose, managing distractors, and professional healthcare communication, not just Part A, B, and C drills. It is also fully documented, scalable, and ready to be delivered consistently by all our official instructors.
13 — Is the curriculum aligned to OET's official skill framework?
Yes. Every single week explicitly names the official OET sub-skill being taught. For example, Week 2 targets Reading Skill 1 and Listening Skill 1, while Week 6 targets Speaking Skill 4. By Week 10, all 20 official sub-skills across Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking have been introduced, developed, and independently applied. This is a genuine, purpose-built mapping, not a course retrofitted afterward to match OET’s criteria.
14 — How will I be assessed and given feedback?
From Week 1, you receive ongoing teacher and peer feedback, both formal and informal, through live practice, class discussions, teacher review, and written feedback on submitted work. From Weeks 2–8, feedback focuses on key exam skills, while Weeks 9–10 provide intensive final feedback on full practice and mock tests to prepare you for the exam.
15 — Can you arrange an orientation or a dedicated cohort for my group or organisation?
Yes. We can arrange an orientation for individuals, professional groups, healthcare organisations, or companies to introduce our OET Core program and five professional specialisations, and dedicated cohorts can also be created when needed.
