What is TESL Canada and its certification standards?

TESL Canada (Teachers of English as a Second Language Canada) is a national organization that sets standards for ESL teacher training and certification across Canada. It ensures high-quality education through accreditation and certification programs.

TESL Canada Certification Standards

Standard 1 – Requires 120 hours of coursework and a 20-hour practicum. Suitable for teaching in private language schools.

Standard 2 – Requires 250 hours of coursework and a 50-hour practicum. Preferred for teaching in more established language programs.

Standard 3 – Requires a Master’s or PhD in TESOL/Applied Linguistics from a TESL Canada or Universities Canada-listed university, with coursework and practicum equivalent to Standard 2. Graduates must either submit verified supervised teaching experience or complete a 50-hour practicum at a TESL Canada-recognized center.

How do participants communicate in this program?

All communication happens through Moodle and live platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet. Trainees interact with supervisors asynchronously by submitting assignments, receiving feedback, and participating in forum discussions. They also communicate synchronously through live sessions. The number of live sessions varies by course. If applicants are in British Columbia, they may also arrange an in-person wrap-up meeting.

Do you offer preparatory courses, or just observation and practicum?

Yes, before the practicum, we provide two free preparatory courses: TESOL 100 (TESOL Basics) and TESOL 110 (Lesson Planning). These courses help trainees refresh their TESOL knowledge and prepare for the observation and practicum phases.

What happens during the observation section?

The observation phase consists of three phases:

The observation phase consists of three stages, where trainees watch lessons, complete observation forms, and write reflections. Each phase includes a lesson, a podcast, and supplementary files to support learning.

– Observing pre-recorded lessons from expert ESL teachers.

Observing full-length ESL classes.

Observing multiple online ESL classes.

What happens during the practicum phase?

The practicum phase consists of three stages, where trainees plan and deliver lessons, receive feedback, and refine their teaching skills. Each phase includes a unique lesson, a podcast, supplementary files, and sample materials to support effective instruction.

– Teaching asynchronously by planning and making ESL lessons.

– One-on-one live tutoring ESL sessions.

– Teaching multiple online ESL group sessions.

How do I apply for an external practicum placement?

Start by reviewing the three types of practicums and selecting the one that fits your needs. Then, send a short email to the admin office ([email protected]) requesting the online application form. After filling out the form, submit all required documents listed in the checklist. You will receive your admission results within 3–5 business days. If accepted, you will be registered in the program and gain access to our learning platform.

Can you coordinate with my college to accommodate my practicum hours and exchange reports?

Yes, we can communicate with your college to review their requirements and accept their observation and practicum criteria and forms. Our supervisors can complete their forms accordingly, or we can use our own practicum documentation if needed.

What happens after I complete this program?

Once you finish all observation and practicum phases, we prepare and provide a copy of your completion documents. We also send a copy to TESL Canada, allowing you to apply for certification. You must also request your institution to submit your theory course records to TESL Canada.
